Just a bit about me
My interest in photography grew out of a passion for looking at and understanding the natural world around me.
I have always loved to see and experience new things, new perspectives, new phenomenon. Growing up in the Rocky Mountains of the West, I was surrounded by scenic wonders, spectacular weather, and dark night skies. With a fascination for atmospheric phenomenon, astronomy, wildlife, and the “lay of the land,” I soon developed a desire to photograph the amazing things I was seeing.
Unlike most photographer’s who say they were hooked when their father gave them a Kodak Brownie at age seven, I didn’t learn photography until later in life. During the passage of Comet Hale-Bopp in 1997 I discovered that one can actually control photography in a predictable way and get images that you want. I purchased my first SLR, a Canon AE-1, and have never looked back.
From there I have traveled and taken pictures all over the world including Japan, Africa, Australia, Hawaii and countless other Pacific Islands, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
For the gear-heads out there, the following is a list of my current equipment:
Canon EOS 5D - 12.7 megapixel digital camera body.
Canon EOS D60 - 6.3 megapixel digital camera body.
Canon EF 17-40L, EF 24-70L, EF 70-200L IS, and EF 100-400L IS zoom lenses. I also use the Canon EF 28 mm f2.8, EF 50 mm f1.8, and EF 100 mm f2.8 Macro prime lenses. Recently I have added the Lensbaby 2.0 as well as a modified Holga lens.
Canon Speedlite 580 EX and 430 EZ with wireless transmitters and flash extenders.
Gitzo 1327 carbon fiber tripod, Bogen 685B Monopod, Kirk BH-3 ballhead, Kirk camera and lens plates.
And of course a Canon Powershot A520 - 4 megapixel digital camera for those point and shoot moments.
